Former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, was admitted to a city-based hospital on Saturday afternoon following complaints of breathing complications. The 79-year-old leader, who governed the state from 2000 to 2011, was immediately placed on mechanical ventilator support in the hospital's critical care unit after being transported from his Palm Avenue residence via a green corridor.
Bhattacharya has been battling Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and other age-related ailments for a considerable period. His health condition worsened significantly in the afternoon, leading to unconsciousness, and prompting the rush to the hospital, according to PTI.
A specialized medical team, including a cardiologist and a pulmonologist, is closely monitoring his critical condition. Bhattacharya's wife, Mira Bhattacharya, and daughter, Suchetana Bhattacharya, are also present in the hospital.
In recent years, the former chief minister has withdrawn from public life due to his health challenges. He stepped down from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] politburo and central committee in 2015, followed by relinquishing his membership of the state secretariat in 2018.
