Azad was shot at by unidentified assailants in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur on Wednesday (June 28). He was hit by a bullet shell after his attackers fired four rounds pointing at his convoy.
Superintendent of Police (City) Abimanyu Manglik said the assailants were in a car and opened fire on Azad's SUV from the right side. "A bullet grazed his abdomen. He has been admitted to the hospital and his condition is stable."
After being discharged from the hospital on Thursday, Azad said, “I was fighting for my life but the criminals are still roaming free. This can't be done without the protection of those in power...I believe that this is an acute negligence by the Government. Chief Minister has not said a word, it shows that he is protecting the criminals.”
The police had registered a case of attempt to murder under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
