Fresh Violence In Manipur Leaves 1 Person Shot, Several Houses Burnt Down

Incidents of houses being torched were reported from the Imphal Valley amid a 24-hour strike called by the coordinating committee of 27 assembly constituencies on Saturday.

Fresh violence broke out in the Imphal West District on Saturday evening when a mob went on a rampage setting 15 houses on fire and shooting one person in the leg.

According to the officials from Manipur, the incident took place at Langol Games village reportedly. It is also said that the security personnel had fired several rounds of tear gas shells to control the situation and disperse the mob.

It was a 45-year-old man who was shot during the violence and was later admitted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) with bullet wounds on his left thigh. A PTI report said that he is stated to be out of danger at present.

Restrictions have been imposed in the place of violence and the situation is said to have improved on Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, in Imphal East district's Checkon area, a large commercial establishment was burnt down on Saturday. Not just that the officials informed PTI that three nearby houses were also torched.

The firefighters later doused the fire.

These violent incidents occurred in Imphal Valley amidst the 24-hour general strike which was called by the coordinating committee of 27 assembly constituencies on Saturday. The strike paralysed normal life there for the rest of the residents.

The ethnic clashes broke out in Manipur in May, and have been continuing for the last three months, claiming over 160 lives.
