Government To Present Bills Proposing 33% Women's Reservation In Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry Assemblies

This initiative follows the Parliament's approval of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam in September, which seeks to provide one-third reservation for women in both the Lok Sabha and Assemblies.

The government is set to introduce two bills in Parliament on Tuesday, aiming to reserve 33% of seats for women in the assemblies of Union Territories Jammu and Kashmir and Puducherry, according to reliable sources.

This initiative follows the Parliament's approval of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam in September, which seeks to provide one-third reservation for women in both the Lok Sabha and Assemblies.

However, the implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is contingent on a delimitation exercise scheduled for 2029.

The upcoming bills specifically target the assemblies of Jammu and Kashmir and Puducherry, where 33% of seats would be reserved for women.

Puducherry, with 30 assembly constituencies, and Jammu and Kashmir, with 114 seats post-delimitation, including 24 designated for areas under Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, will see a transformative shift towards gender inclusivity if the bills are enacted.
