Along with the five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and eventually acceptance), many women go through long stages of feeling numb or are in shock. There is a deep sense of fearfulness and anxiety on how they will manage finances, children’s responsibility, their education or taking big life decisions for their future. Some feel anger and rage towards their partners for being left alone. Psychologists say that many women even go through ‘Complicated grief’ which is like being in an ongoing, heightened state of mourning that keeps you from healing. Mumbai-based psychiatrist Dr Zirak Marker says, “Spousal loss is linked to a system of mental, social, behavioural and biological issues, consistent with a stress-induced ‘weathering process’.
