I Owe Big Apology To People For Supporting Demonetisation, PM Should Also Accept Mistake, Says Kamal Haasan

Haasan was one of the celebrities who applauded the government's stance to demonetise higher denomination notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 in November last year.

Actor Kamal Haasan, who might soon be entering politics, on Wednesday issued an apology for his "hurried" support to the Narendra Modi government's move to demonetise higher denomination notes. He also said that "If the PM accepts his mistake, my salaam (salute) awaits him."

In a column titled ‘A big apology’ in the Tamil magazine Vikatan, Haasan said: "I owe a big apology to the people for supporting demonetisation in a hurry. I initially thought demonetisation move was going to curb black money and that people should bear with the problems during that transition."

Haasan was one of the celebrities who applauded the government's stance to demonetise higher denomination notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 in November last year.

Haasan had recently announced his plans to make it big in the political front and had indicated to launch his own politival party. This comment comes at just few days after he clearly said that "saffron is not my colour", nipping in the bud all speculations of him joining BJP.

The actor wrote in the article that he has come to accept his initial mistake. "I thought people should bear with minor irritants in the goal to eradicate black money," he wrote.

"Salute Mr Modi. This move has to be celebrated across political party lines. Most importantly by earnest taxpayers," the actor had said in a tweet then.

But serious accusations and voices saying that the idea of demonetisation was a deception has caused a change of his heart, he further said.

Haasan has said to will give "salaam (salute) to the Prime Minister if he accepts his mistake." Adding that it's a virtue to accept own's mistake like Gandhi did.

He had also opposed the Centre’s stand on beef and had said the government can’t give the menu but should indeed give food to the people of India.
