There has been no let up in protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act.
Protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019, continued across India on Saturday as tensions remained high in national capital Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. At least 11 people were killed in Uttar Pradesh on Friday during protests. The Yogi Adityanath-led government has ordered all schools and colleges to stay closed today.
Police lathi-charged and Water Cannon people after protests turned violent at Daryaganj in Old Delhi. Around 40 people were injured in the clashes while 40 others were detained by the police, including minors. Curfew has also been imposed in parts of Madhya Pradesh following violent protests against the law. Dozens were taken into preventive custody at the historic Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad during a protest after Friday prayers.
Protests are scheduled in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and other cities today.

2:40 PM: Gaurav Grover, Superintendent of Police (SP) Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, said six cases have been registered, 38 people have been detained in connection with violence during protests yesterday.
He said around 100 people have been identified and named in FIR and strict action will be taken against "violent elements".

2:20 PM: Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad Ravan has been arrested in connection with the violence in Old Delhi's Daryaganj, police said on Saturday. He was initially detained and arrested later, police said.
2:10 PM: A four-member delegation of All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) will visit the families of those who were killed in violence that broke out during protests in Lucknow. The party, ruling in West Bengal, has strongly opposed the CAA and NRC.

10:50 AM: At least 11 people, including an 8-year-old boy, have lost their lives in Uttar Pradesh as the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act turned violent in the state. The boy died in a stampede as police chased a crowd of protesters.
10:30 AM: Ten people have been arrested in connection with the violence in Daryaganj in Old Delhi during a protest against the new citizenship law, police said on Saturday. They have been charged with rioting and using force to deter policemen from doing duty.

9:40 AM: CT Ravi, Karnataka Minister in the BJP-led government, hit back at Congress's UT Khader who had said the state will explode if CAA is imposed. Ravi said, "People with such mentality had set fire in Godhra and killed Karsevakas. Hope he remembers what answer was given. If he doesn't, he can recall it. The majority is very patient, please look back and see what happens when patience of majority runs out."
Karnataka has seen clashes between protesters and the police earlier. Two protesters were killed during violent protests in Mangalore, which has since been under curfew.
