The lockdown has failed to achieve the objectives stated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address to the nation, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Tuesday afternoon, adding India is the only country where the cases of coronavirus are exponentially rising and we are lifting restrictions. "India is facing the results of a failed lockdown," he said.
In a press conference, Rahul said that it was pretty clear that the aim and purpose of lockdown have failed in India. The former Congress President added that he had been conversing with state chief ministers and they, according to him, "have been fighting a lone battle."
"What is the Centre planning to do now?" he asked.
"What is the government's strategy as far as opening up of India is concerned," Rahul asked adding, "how does it intend to help migrants and states?"
Speaking of migrant labourers, Rahul said he had been meeting them as well as talking to them over zoom calls. "They say our trust has been broken," Rahul said, adding "I don't like hearing those words from anyone, no matter if he is rich or poor."
Rahul also said that it will be difficult for Congress-ruled states to function without central support.
India has registered 6,535 new coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours, taking the country's COVID-19 tally to 1,45,380, the Ministry of Health and Family Development said on Tuesday.
The country recorded another 146 deaths in the last one day, taking the fatalities due to COVID-19 to 4,167, the ministry said. Of the 1,45,380 cases, 80,722 are active, 60,490 have been cured or discharged and 4167 have lost their lives to the deadly virus.
