Amid allegations of farmer protests having an "adverse impact" on the economy of certain states, the National Human Rights Commission recently sent notices to four states, seeking reports on the allegations. The body has asked the governments of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan as well as their police chiefs to provide reports on how the ongoing agitations were affecting industrial units and transportation, and whether Covid safety norms were being breached at the protests sites.
For the latter, the NHRC has also asked the National Disaster Management Authority, Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the Union Health Ministry to submit reports with respect to various aspects and observance of Covid protocols. In a statement, it said that the notices came following several complaints against the farmers' protests pertaining to the issues being probed.
