Several other senior leaders were also put under house arrest and the government over the past few months has released them in phases.
Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah, who had been in detention under the strict Public Safety Act, was released on Tuesday nearly eight months after he was placed under house arrest. This comes following the government order revoking the PSA against him.
Another former state chief minister Mehbooba Mufti is still under detention since the day before the Centre revoked Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Several other senior leaders were also put under house arrest and the government over the past few months has released them in phases.
Omar's father and three-time J&K CM Farooq Abdullah was released earlier this month, seven months after the 83-year-old was detained. Farooq's detention was extended twice -- once in September and then again in March before the order to revoke PSA came from the government.
The PSA dossier prepared by the police against the 49-year-old Omar, who had served as minister of state for external affairs as well as commerce and industries, includes in its charges his ability to convince electorates to vote in huge numbers amid poll boycott calls by separatists and militants.
"The capacity of the subject to influence people for any cause can be gauged from the fact that he was able to convince his electorate to come out and vote in huge numbers even during peak of militancy and poll boycotts."
The grounds of detention against Omar, who was chief minister of the state from 2009-14, state that on the eve of the reorganisation of the state he had made attempts to provoke general masses against the revocation of Articles 370 and 35-A.
The grounds also mention his comments on social networking sites to instigate common people against the decisions on Articles 370 and 35-A which had the potential of disturbing public order.
