Apprise Within 10 Days Dates for Lokpal Selection Committee Meeting: SC To Govt

The apex court refused to pass directions to disclose three panels of names recommended by the Lokpal search committee.

The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the government to inform within 10 days possible date for the meeting of the selection committee for appointment of Lokpal.

AG said that he would ensure convening of meetings of the selection committee for appointment of Lokpal as soon as possible, also ascertaining that the search committee has recommended three panels of names for appointing a chairperson, judicial and non-judicial members of Lokpal.

The apex court further refused to pass directions to disclose three panels of names recommended by the Lokpal search committee.

On Jan 4, 2019, the Supreme Court had expressed disappointment over the slow pace of progress in the appointment of a Lokpal and directed the Centre to file an affidavit on the steps taken to appoint an anti-corruption ombudsman within two weeks.
At its next hearing, in the same month,  the Supreme Court “requested” the Lokpal search committee, constituted to suggest names for appointment of the country’s first anti-corruption ombudsman, to complete its task and submit a panel of names by February-end.
On Feb 6, the government said the search committee for anti-corruption ombudsman Lokpal has invited applications for the post of chairperson and members of the Lokpal.
