Two days before national capital Delhi goes to polls, the BJP on Friday tweeted a video of 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
The video posted on BJP’s official Twitter handle has a clip of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in which he is heard saying, “When a tree falls, the earth shakes.”
The anti-Sikh riots took place after the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
According to official records, about 2,800 Sikhs were killed across India, including 2,100 in Delhi, during the pogrom that broke out after Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards.
On two separate occasions last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi targeted the Congress by dragging late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in his rally speeches.
He said that Rajiv Gandhi "was termed 'Mr Clean' by his courtiers, but his life ended as 'Bhrastachari number 1' (corrupt number 1)".
In another incident, Modi accused the late PM of using Navy warship for "vacations with family".
Politics over 1984 anti-Sikh riots intensified after Congress leader Sam Pitroda said "happened in 1984, so what?" to BJP's claim citing the Nanavati commission report that the instructions for the violence had come from late Rajiv Gandhi.
Delhi votes on May 12 on the sixth round of polling for Lok Sabha elections. Many of the victims of 1984 riots live in the west and east Delhi.
