India's proposal to grant full membership of the G20 to the African Union (AU) has found its way into the draft communique being prepared for the annual G20 summit set to be held in New Delhi this September, according to sources familiar with the matter. The ongoing Sherpas' meeting, attended by top negotiators from G20 nations, is dedicated to extensive discussions on the communique and co-authoring the leaders' declaration for the upcoming summit.
The draft communique now includes the proposition of granting the African Union full G20 membership, acknowledging India's argument that the voice and representation of the African continent should not be overlooked. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently written to G20 leaders, urging them to consider India's proposal. While no disagreements have been reported so far, sources caution that the final approval will depend on achieving consensus among all member nations during the summit.
India's G20 presidency has emphasized incorporating African priorities into the G20 agenda, with initiatives such as the Voice of the Global South Summit held earlier this year. The African Union, comprising 55 member states and established in 2002, is regarded as the primary representative of Africa's interests and development.
