India Set To Sign Deals For 26 Rafale Fighters, 3 Scorpene Submarines During PM Modi's Visit To France: Report

With these eagerly anticipated deals valued at approximately Rs 90,000 crore, India aims to enhance its maritime strength and bridge the capability gap, addressing the pressing operational requirements of the Indian Navy.

In a significant development, India is poised to enhance its naval capabilities with the planned acquisition of 26 Rafale M naval jets and three additional Scorpene submarines from France. These eagerly anticipated deals, valued at approximately Rs 90,000 crore, are expected to be officially announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to France from July 14 to 16.

The defense procurement board (DPP) has given its clearance for the deals, marking a crucial step forward. The agreements will include 22 single-seater and four double-seater trainer versions of the Rafale M aircraft, while the three additional submarines will be incorporated into the ongoing Scorpene deal under Project 75. With the imminent defense ministry's approval, the Rafale aircraft will be deployed on the Indian Navy's aircraft carriers, addressing the pressing need to meet their operational requirements, according to India Today.

Presently, the Indian Navy faces a shortage of aircraft and submarines, amplifying the urgency to bridge the capability gap. The induction of these new assets will significantly augment the naval forces' strength. The Rafale M jets will replace the existing MiG-29 aircraft and will be deployed on the INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya carriers. The deals will undergo review by the defense acquisition council in the coming days before their official announcement in France.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited as the chief guest at the prestigious Bastille Day Parade in Paris, France, on July 14. This visit not only symbolizes the strong bilateral ties between India and France but also provides an opportune moment to finalize and celebrate the defense deals. Moreover, a contingent comprising troops from the Indian Army's Punjab Regiment, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Air Force will participate in the parade, showcasing India's military prowess on an international stage.
