Forced to undress, paraded naked and running from one hostel room to the other -- Kolkata police's initial probe revealed the ordeal of the 17-year-old Jadavpur Student minutes before he fell from the corridor of the main hostel's second floor.

According to investigators, the teen was ragged and "sexually molested". The police so far arrested 123 people including present and former students of the varsity, who "had played active roles" in the entire episode leading to his death. The family of the student, who fell to his death on the night of August 9, had earlier alleged that he was a victim of ragging and sexual molestation.

Paraded naked, ragged, abused

After reconstructing the incident in the hostel building, Kolkata police revealed that the 17-year-old student was initially summoned to Room No. 70 – on the second floor — by his seniors. He was forced to undress by his seniors. He was also paraded naked while walking in the corridor. To escape, the student started running from one hostel room to the other even as the senior students chased him.

According to a report by the Indian Express, the 17-year-old student was “disrobed, bullied and abused with homosexual slurs”.

"The teen was definitely ragged and sexually molested. He was paraded naked in the corridor after he was forced to undress in room No. 70. We have evidence. Those 12 arrested have played some role in the whole episode," a police officer told PTI. The ragging continued until 11 pm, according to investigators. However, the police is yet to ascertain how the student ended up falling from the hostel building.

The police further got hold of a WhatsApp group created by one of the arrested accused, to allegedly "misdirect the cops". "Probe also revealed that the arrested accused had planned to misdirect police so that the ragging part could be concealed," the officer said.

Meanwhile, student-led associations have been protesting, demanding that the committee formed by the varsity to probe into the death of the 17-year-old student make its report public in 48 hours. CPI(M) students wing SFI also called for immediate publication of names of all occupants who had been overstaying in the varsity hostels.
