A militant was killed, while an Army Officer who earlier injured during an ongoing encounter in Jammu Kashmir's Kupwara district has succumbed to his injuries at the hospital on Wednesday. Earlier, Army said its non-commissioned officer (NCO) was injured in the gunfight.

Taking to microblogging site-X, Army said, "Based on specific input regarding presence of terrorists in general area Kowut, Kupwara, a Joint Search Operation was launched by IndianArmy & JmuKmrPolice on days leading upto 23 July 24."

It added, "On 24 July, suspicious movement was observed and challenged by vigilant troops, in response to which terrorists opened indiscriminate fire. In the ensuing fire fight one terrorist has been eliminated and a NCO injured".

The latest encounter comes days after the Army foiled an infiltration bid in Kupwara’s Keran sector in which two militants were killed. Earlier, on July 14, three terrorists were killed as security forces foiled another infiltration bid in Keran.

Also, the encounter comes a day after a soldier was killed as the Army thwarted an infiltration bid along the LoC in the Poonch district of the Jammu region, which has been on the edge amid spike in terror activities.

There has also been spike in militant activities in Kashmir recently while the security forces have been maintaining strict vigil to track the movement of militants and thwart their nefarious designs.

The Keran sector along Line of Control(LoC) in north Kashmir has been used as a regular infiltration route. This year in April, the Army killed two infiltrators in Baramulla’s Uri. It was the first such attempt of the year.
