Lok Sabha Adjourned Sine Die, House Functioned For Just 39 Hours

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said the house functioned for a total of 39 hours during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

The Lok Sabha was on Friday adjourned sine die. The adjournment brought the Monsoon Session of the Parliament to an end.

The Monsoon Session was largely dominated by the face-off over Manipur violence and the Delhi Services Bill. As the Opposition frequently created an uproar amid a call for a discussion on Manipur and a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the house was frequently adjourned and little business was conducted.

Speaker Om Birla said the house functioned for a total of 39 hours.

Birla said the Monsoon Session witnessed the passage of important bills, such as the Digital Data Protection Bill and the Delhi Services Bill.

Besides the face-off over Manipur violence, the no-confidence motion brought by Congress was also a highlight of the session. The motion was defeated by a voice vote as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has clear majority in the house. The trust vote, however, made PM Modi make a statement on Manipur, which he had not done since the violence broke out on May 3.

Manipur has been in the grips of ethnic violence since May 3 when clashes erupted between the state's Meitei and tribal communities. Over 150 people have been killed, around 60,000 have been displaced, and houses, religious places, and political establishments have been attacked. The Opposition has criticised Modi for being silent on the issue. It was only at the beginning of the Monsoon Session that Modi addressed the Manipur violence after a video of two tribal women being paraded naked and groped surfaced that led to nationwide outrage.

Modi and several ministers, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah, were present in the House at the time of adjournment, reported PTI, adding that  Birla adjourned the House sine die after his customary valedictory speech.
