In an unprecedented standoff in Parliament, a total 146 opposition MPs have been suspended from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha
Suspension spree in Parliament is still on with another set three MPs getting sacked from Lok Sabha on Thursday, taking the tally of suspended members of both houses to 146. The suspension episode began on Monday when 78 opposition MPs were ousted from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha combined, this followed 49 suspensions on Tuesday, two on Wednesday and three more on Thursday.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is among those suspended, said on Tuesday, "...It is clear that they want an Opposition-mukt Lok Sabha and they will do something similar in Rajya Sabha. At this point, unfortunately, we have to start writing obituaries for Parliamentary democracy in India...Today, in solidarity with my colleagues, I too joined the protest and everybody who was present has been suspended for the rest of the session which means they want to pass their Bills without any discussion. I think it is a betrayal of Parliamentary democracy..."
Thursday's action took the total number of opposition MPs suspended from both houses to 146 since last week on the issue of Parliament security breach.
On December 13, two protesters jumped into the lower house chamber and opened smoke cans when proceedings were on.
Congress on Tuesday said it is truly ironical that the BJP MP "who helped the two intruders" gain entry to the Lok Sabha on December 13 continues to be an MP, while INDIA bloc MPs demanding a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah over the issue have been suspended from Parliament.
The suspension of 78 opposition MPs on Monday sparked massive outrage from the Congress and other parties that accused the BJP government of trying to bulldoze key legislations in an "Opposition-less" Parliament.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hit out at opposition parties for their protests in Parliament during a BJP parliamentary party address on Tuesday. PM Modi said that conduct of Opposition parties would lead to a decrease in their numbers in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, adding that the BJP would gain in strength.
Expressing his concern, PM Modi addressed what he deemed as "attempts" to justify the Parliament security breach, describing them as worrisome. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi conveyed the Prime Minister's remarks to reporters.
Today's action has taken the total number of opposition MPs suspended from both houses to 146 (3 on Thursday + 143 till Wednesday evening). AAP member Sanjay Singh has been suspended as a Rajya Sabha member from July 24.
Last Thursday, the Lok Sabha suspended 13 members for the remaining part of the Winter Session for waving placards and disrupting proceedings over the Parliament security breach issue. Trinamool member Derek O'Brien was suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the remainder of the Winter Session for "unruly" behaviour.

Opposition's INDIA bloc has 95 MPs in Rajya Sabha of which 45 were suspended on Monday. Another MP, AAP's Sanjay Singh, is behind bars in the Delhi liquor policy case and already stands suspended.
In Lok Sabha, Opposition has a total strength of 133 MPs of whom five have been suspended in the last two days, 49 on Tuesday, 33 were suspended on Monday while 13 were suspended last week.
