Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday held a meeting of the government and Opposition leaders, but could not break the logjam in the house.
The government said Union Home Minister Amit Shah would reply to the debate on the discussion on Manipur violence, but the Opposition stuck to its demand that Prime Minister Narendra should make a statement on the situation. Previously, too, the Opposition has criticised Modi for being silent on Manipur.
Manipur has been in the grip of ethnic violence between the state's Meitei and tribal communities since May 3. Over 150 people have bee killed and thousands have been displaced. Houses, religious buildings, public infrastructure, and political establishments have also been attacked during this time. Last week, a video of two tribal women paraded naked and being groped surfaced and led to nationwide outrage. The incident occurred on May 4.
As the Opposition presses its demand for Modi to make a statement on Manipur, the sittings of the both the houses so have been marred with adjournments and little business has been conducted.
After continued disruptions, Birla had made fresh attempts to end the logjam, parliamentary sources said after the meeting, reported PTI.
Deputy Leader and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Shah have told Lok Sabha that the government was ready for a discussion, reported PTI.
