Maharashtra on Friday recorded 43,211 new coronavirus cases, down by 3,195 from a day ago, and 19 fresh fatalities linked to the infection, while the active tally crossed the 2.60-lakh mark, the health department said.
The state also reported 238 new cases of the Omicron variant of coronavirus, raising their overall count to 1,605, a health department official said.

With these additions, Maharashtra's tally of COVID-19 cases jumped to 71,24,278, while the death toll climbed to 1,41,756, he said. The state had registered 46,406 COVID-19 cases and 36 fatalities on Thursday. Thus, cases dropped by 3,195 and deaths by 17 in a span of 24 hours. Maharashtra's positivity rate is 21.13 per cent, the official said. The rate indicates the percentage of people who test positive for the virus of those overall who have been tested.
Of the 238 new cases of the highly contagious variant Omicron, 197 were reported from Pune city, 32 from Pimpri-Chinchwad industrial township, three each from Navi Mumbai and Pune rural, two from Mumbai and one from Akola, the official said. Of the 43,211 new cases and 19 deaths in the state, 11,317 infections and nine fatalities were reported from Mumbai city alone.
The number of recovered cases surged to 67,17,125 after 33,356 patients were discharged during the day, he said. According to the official, Maharashtra's coronavirus recovery rate is 94.28 per cent, while the fatality rate is 1.98 per cent. Maharashtra's tally of active cases shot up to 2,61,658 due to the widening gap between new and recovered infections.
Currently, 19,10,361 people are in home quarantine and another 9,286 in institutional quarantine, he said. As many as 2,04,478 coronavirus tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, taking their cumulative tally to 7,15,64,070. The Mumbai region, which comprises the metropolis and its satellite cities, recorded 22,037 new cases, followed by the Pune region (11,421), Nashik (3,182), Nagpur (2,552), Kolhapur (1,264), Latur (1,227), Aurangabad (913), and the Akola region (615), a health department bulletin said.
Out of the total 19 deaths, the Mumbai region reported 15 fatalities followed by three in the Aurangabad region and one in the Kolhapur region, it said. A region consists of a set of districts.
