Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced on Wednesday that a decision regarding a caste-based census will be made after consulting all sections of society and considering public sentiments.
Shinde visited the memorials of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) founder K B Hedgewar and second 'sarsanghchalak' MS Golwalkar in the Reshimbagh area and paid his respects.
RSS functionary Shridhar Gadge expressed opposition to a caste-based census, questioning its benefits. Gadge, the Vidarbha Sah-Sanghchalak, emphasized that while such an exercise might politically benefit certain groups by providing caste-related population data, it is socially and in terms of national unity, not advisable.
Responding to the RSS functionary's comments, Shinde stated on Wednesday, "Maharashtra is a progressive state with a unique culture and traditions distinct from other states. All communities and castes coexist, collaborate, and celebrate together. Therefore, a decision will be made after considering the opinions of all sections of society and keeping in mind the sentiments of the people."
Shinde, who formed an alliance with the BJP last year to govern the state, explained, "We visit Dr. Hedgewar Smruti Mandir every year during the winter session. I find peace and inspiration here, which is why we come."
Addressing the issue of politics surrounding Hindutva, Shinde emphasized, "There is no political motive behind our visits here." He stated that his government is based on the ideologies of Hindutva and Balasaheb Thackeray, the late founder of Shiv Sena.
"This Hindutva of development, as mentioned by our prime minister, is for 'sabka saath, sabka vikas,'" Shinde added.
Highlighting his government's representation of the common people, Shinde asserted that anyone can meet the chief minister, emphasizing the accessibility feature of his administration. "I work as a common man, and that's why people appreciate us and our government," he concluded.
It is noteworthy that the Congress supports a nationwide caste census.
