MEA Had No Information About Jaishankar's Meeting With Canadian FM: MEA Spokesperson

However, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Arindam Bagchi agreed that the Indian officials have been in touch with Canadians at various levels in a bid to resolve the diplomatic tension between the two nations. 

After a news emerged that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a secret meeting with Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly amid the escalating tension between India and Canada, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Arindam Bagchi on Thursday said he didn't have information about the meering. 

However, he agreed that the Indian officials have been in touch with Canadians at various levels in a bid to resolve the diplomatic tension between the two nations. 

 "We have been in touch with Canadians at various levels. Regarding any specific interaction, I don't have any particular information to share", Bagchi said at a press conference.

Apart from this, the MEA spokesperson also spoke about Trudeau raising the issue of "respecting the rule of law and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations" with other countries.

"Don't know how it helps address the core issue," Bagchi said.

He added that the core issue was the space given by Canada to terrorist and criminal elements.

Bagchi further said, "We would urge Canada to take seriously their international obligations to provide security for our diplomats and their premises. Everything India is doing is in compliance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations."

India-Canada Diplomatic Feud

The diplomatic relations between India and Canada worsened recently following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's explosive remarks on Indian government's possible link with the orchestration of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar's assassination.

Nijjar was a Canadian citizen and was shot dead by two masked gunmen on June 18 in British Columbia.
