Torrential rains have marooned Mumbai in what is said to be amongst the worst downpours since July 26, 2005.

Mumbai was crippled by its heaviest rain in 12 years on Tuesday, recording almost 300 mm in some parts. According to the reports, the heavy rainfall has claimed 5 lives in three different parts of the city.
In the first incident, a 32-year-old woman died after drowning in a rainwater-filled drain near Thane. In the second incident a 14-year-old teenager died after falling into a swollen drain near a mall in Thane.
In the third incident that was reported from Mumbai's Vikhroli district, three people were killed after a protective wall collapsed on a house. Among the three killed 2 were minors aged between 2-3 years.
The heavy rainfall recorded on Tuesday has paralysed the regular busy life of the Mumbaikers. The CM has ordered the schools and colleges to remain shut on Wednesday following forecast of heavy rainfall by the MET department.
“Heavy waterlogging expected in coming hours due to heavy showers coupled with high tide. Please check your route before venturing out,” the Mumbai police said in a tweet, advising people to remain indoors.
Charan Singh, Director, India Meteorological Department, said a ‘Red’ warning has been issued for the next 24 hours for the city and adjoining areas, indicating there could be very heavy rainfall. He said the city and surrounding areas would continue to receive heavy rainfall over the next 2-3 days.
