Mumbai: Couple Denied Flat For Being 'Marathi Manus', Incident Sparks Outrage

According to Trupi Devrukhkar, she along with her husband had visited Mulund West to explore office space options and were unexpectedly refused housing by the local Gujarati community due to their Marathi ethnicity.

In an untoward incident, a Marathi couple in Mumbai was stopped from purchasing a flat for being ‘Marathi Manus’. The incident appeared to be shocking despite the fact that flat buyers and tenants in Mumbai have been known for discrimination on the basis of food and religious preferences.

About the incident

The incident drew attention after Trupi Devrukhkar took it to social media and posted a video about her horrifying experience.

According to Trupi, she along with her husband had visited Mulund West to explore office space options and were unexpectedly refused housing by the local Gujarati community due to their Marathi ethnicity.

Trupti  further explained that when she asked the reason behind such discrimination then, the officer bearer informed them about their rule.

When asked about the rulebook, they failed to provide it and thrashed them outside of the society, Trupi alleged in her viral video.

How did the authorities react?

In light of the unacceptable incident, workers of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) had approached the society officer bearer and asked questions about their discriminatory behaviour and demanded an apology from those who refused housing to Trupti.

MNS workers in Mulund confronted the individuals involved and compelled them to issue an apology.

The incident has created strong reactions from the society and raised questions over the lethargic attitude of the politicians.
