Following a red alert issued by the IMD in Mumbai, the BMC has urged all citizens to stay alert, stay indoors and kindly follow instructions from the administration amid heavy rainfall.
All schools, colleges, and municipal offices will remain shut in Mumbai and its suburbs in view of the heavy rainfall predicted by the weather department in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said on Wednesday. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert in the city from Wednesday 8 pm to Thursday afternoon.
This year, Mumbai recorded its wettest July ever with rainfall of 1557.8 mm so far.
The civic body further urged all citizens to stay alert, stay indoors and kindly follow instructions from the administration.
"In view of this, considering the safety of students as a top priority, the Municipal Commissioner and Administratior Dr. Iqbal Singh Chahal has declared a holiday for all Municipal, Government and Private primary, secondary and higher secondary schools and all colleges in the Mumbai City and Suburbs, on tomorrow Thursday, 27 July 2023," IMD wrote in a tweet.
Earlier, on Wednesday afternoon, the weather department issued an Orange alert in the city along with Thane, Raigad, and Palghar following incessant heavy rainfall. Mumbai received 101.35 mm of average rainfall between 8am and 10pm on Wednesday, while eastern and western suburbs recorded 87.54 mm and 102.55 mm of average rainfall in the same period.
The heavy to heavy rainfall affected the traffic movement in the city while trains were reported to be running on time.
