India on Friday announced that the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration is “almost ready” and will be recommended to the leaders of the grouping during the conclave.
India's G20 sherpa Amitabh Kant in a press conference ahead of the summit beginning on Saturday, said that New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration will be the voice of the global south and developing countries. He added that India's presidency of the G20 has rightfully lived up to Prime Minister Modi’s vision of being inclusive, ambitious, action-oriented and extremely decisive.
"These are the four principles on which we have worked. We have lived up to his vision of being inclusive, action-oriented, ambitious and very decisive during our presidency," Kant said.
"Our New Delhi Leaders' Declaration is almost ready, I would not like to dwell on it because this declaration will be recommended to the leaders during the Summit and the leaders will then accept it and only after it is accepted by the leaders, we will be able to talk about the actual achievements of this declaration," he added. Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said that he was hopeful of consensus on G20 communique since India's G20 sherpa's announcement, since India is the host, and achieving consensus on the final document is pertinent for its success.
The hardened stance on the war has prevented agreement on even a single communique at ministerial meetings during India's G20 presidency so far this year, leaving it to the leaders to find a way around, if possible.
60 cities across the country hosted over 220 G-20-related meetings. The meetings showcased India’s diversity and federal structure, Kant stated. India is set to address some of the complex global challenges like concerns of the Global South, consequences of the Russia-Ukraine war, a doomed economic scenario, and inculcating and effectuating inclusive growth amidst a fragmented geopolitical atmosphere.
PM Modi, President Joe Biden, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, other leaders of the G20 grouping and chiefs of many leading world bodies like the International Monetary Fund, World Bank and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) are meeting in the capital for the summit.
