Not Our Kerala Story: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor Slams Makers Of Film

Both the ruling CPI(M) in Kerala and the opposition Congress have slammed the makers of the controversial upcoming movie, saying freedom of expression was not a licence to spew venom in society, and the film was an attempt to destroy the communal harmony of the state

Senior Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor chimed in to the controversy surrounding the film 'The Kerala Story' which claims that around 32,000 “missing women” in the state converted, got radicalised and were deployed in terror missions in India and the world.

"It may be *your* Kerala story. It is not *our* Kerala story,” he said in a tweet while sharing the poster of the film.

Both the ruling CPI(M) in Kerala and the opposition Congress have slammed the makers of the controversial upcoming movie, saying freedom of expression was not a licence to spew venom in society, and the film was an attempt to destroy the communal harmony of the state.

Yesterday, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan Sunday said the makers were taking up the Sangh Parivar propaganda of projecting the state as a centre of religious extremism by raising the issue of 'love jihad' -- a concept rejected by the courts, probe agencies and the Home Ministry.

In a statement, the chief minister said such propaganda films and the alienation of Muslims depicted in them should be viewed in the context of Sangh Parivar's efforts to gain political advantage in Kerala. He also accused the Sangh Parivar of trying to destroy the religious harmony in the state by "sowing the poisonous seeds of communalism".

The Kerala Congress too has urged the state government not to give screening permission for the film as it aimed to create "communal divisions in society through false claims".

"This is not the story of Kerala, the Malayalee society will reject with disdain the creations that distort the social situation of Kerala. The Youth Congress will not allow the Sangh Parivar's agenda to be implemented," the Youth Congress in Kerala said in a tweet.

The BJP, on the other hand, questioned how claims of religious terrorism being strong in Kerala can be interpreted as hate propaganda against the state.
