In anticipation of the cyclone-prone period approaching Odisha in October and November, the state government has initiated preparations for potential calamities. Chief Secretary P.K. Jena, presiding over a high-level meeting, has instructed district collectors and department secretaries to stay vigilant for 45 days starting October 10.
The Director of the Bhubaneswar Regional Meteorological Centre, H.R. Biswas, conveyed to the government that the southwest monsoon is expected to withdraw by October 10, setting the stage for cyclone-friendly conditions in the Bay of Bengal. Biswas emphasized the historical trend, noting that most cyclones in the state have formed within this 45-day timeframe.
Odisha, having faced ten major cyclones since 1999, particularly recognizes October as the cyclone season. The devastating impact of past occurrences, such as the super cyclone in 1999 and Cyclone Phailin in 2013, underscores the importance of proactive measures. The Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) official recounted the tragic toll these events took on coastal districts.
