Independent India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, was one of the most prominent freedom fighters and is revered as the 'architect of modern India.' After completing his higher education abroad, Nehru returned to India in the year 1912. In 1929, as the INC's President, he declared "poorna swaraj" as the goal and hoisted the tricolour flag for the first time along the banks of the Ravi river in Lahore. He was also instrumental in drafting the INC's Fundamental Rights and Economic Policy Resolution in 1931, and was a liberal, secular, democratic leader, known for his administrative aptitude and scholastic prowess. Outlook remembers him today for his political legacy that made remarkable strides for India post independence as well.
