The Supreme Court bench claimed that the plea for a Public Interest Litigation regarding the alleged poppy cultivation and narco-terrorism was blaming only one community. They asked for a more specific petition to be filed for consideration.
On Monday, the Supreme Court declined to consider a new Public Interest Litigation regarding the Manipur violence. The PIL requested, among other things, a Special Investigation Team set up for supposed poppy farming and narco-terrorism. The bench asked for a "more specific" petition and pointed out that the current one was blaming only one community making it "very difficult" to entertain.
During the hearing, Mayanglambam Bobby Meetei's representative, senior advocate Madhavi Diwan, requested to withdraw the plea, and the court granted the request.
The bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandcrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra said, "This petition is very difficult to entertain because it places blame on one community."
“You can come with a more specific petition. This petition has everything from the violence to narcotics to deforestation,” the bench also said.
According to Diwan cross-border terrorism and poppy cultivation in the state are the reasons behind the recent violence. The Narcotics Control Bureau, the National Investigation Agency and the NHRC as well as the state government among others were made parties in the plea.
There are several petitions related to different aspects of the violence in Manipur that have been placed in front of the bench.
At least 150 people have been killed and several hundred injured since ethnic violence broke out in the state on May 3 when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
