K came to Ramabai Chawl in Kamathipura from Delhi. She was young when she left her home in Agra and joined the Hijra community. K has seen the downfall of Kamathipura in the last decade. She lives here in Hijra Gully with Khaja Bi, and is waiting for others to return, even for a short while. Ramabai Chawl was sold a few years ago, and a family has moved in. Only the second floor remains a brothel with its bunker beds, its two eunuchs, and an aquarium that contains just one goldfish. K has no illusions about life. She is also vocal about the rights of women and others on their bodies. “Sex work is like any other work,” she says. “So why do we have this morality question?”
