When neighbours of Manoj Ramesh Sane, in the Geeta Akashdeep building in the Geeta Nagar area of Mira Road, a northern suburb of Mumbai, found a foul smell emanating from his flat, they started looking in their homes for a dead rat. When the smell became unbearable, the residents of the seventh floor knocked on Sane’s door too to ask him to check his house for a dead rat. Sane, nor Saraswati Vaidya – the person who lived with him – did not respond to their knocks. After their own attempts to trace the foul smell pointed in the direction of Sane’s closed flat, the residents called in the police.
