As Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to India today from the much talked about World Economic Forum at Davos, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) said the PM should 'stop embarrassing the country.'
It was a jibe at the Prime Minister, who while in Davos, exaggerated the number of Indians who voted for the BJP in 2014, to 600 crore or 6 billion.
According to Election Commission of India, 814.5 million people were registered to vote in the country in 2014.
"In 2014, after three decades, 600 crore Indian voters for the first time gave complete majority to a political party to form a government at the Centre...," Modi said in his address.
The official twitter account of CPI(M) shared a graphic, together with the caption, 'Yo got only 31% votes Mr.Modi. Stop embarrassing the country.'
The official handle of the Prime Minister and the BJP had tweeted the PM's quote, before deleting it in a short span of time.
Modi became the first Indian prime minister in two decades to attend the summit in the Alpine town.
At the event, which has a theme of 'Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World', Modi made a strong case against protectionism, saying such tendencies are considered no less dangerous than terrorism and climate change.
In an interconnected world, globalisation is losing its lustre, the prime minister said and wondered "do global organisations created after the Second World War really reflect the aspirations and dreams of mankind today? With respect to the developing countries there is a very big gap."
Besides a series of meetings with the world leaders and business chiefs after addressing the opening plenary of the World Economic Forum (WEF) , Modi also interacted with the international business community of the Geneva-based organisation that hosts this summit every year here in Davos.
