In a virtual address during the inauguration of an arts and science college for women in Tiruppur, established by the Kongu Vellalar Trust on November 29, 2023, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin took a swipe at AIADMK Ministers, accusing them of neglecting their responsibilities in setting up the college during their tenure.
Stalin also laid the foundation stone for the Dheeran Chinnamalai CBSE School and he highlighted that it was only after the DMK assumed power that Tiruppur MP K. Subbarayan pursued the Trust's request.
He reportedly said, “I monitored the issue personally and removed the obstacle in the land classification as the first step towards establishing the college.” Subsequently, the Higher Education Department granted the necessary permission.
While addressing the event, Stalin remarked, “Permission could not be obtained even though 28 acres of land were purchased to establish a college to be named after [late freedom fighter] Dheeran Chinnamalai. During the erstwhile AIADMK regime, permission could not be obtained despite nine people from this western region being Ministers.”
Despite expressing his desire to inaugurate the college in person, health reasons prevented him from doing so, the CM explained. He acknowledged the efforts of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, stating, “Not just me, Kalaignar [former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi] has also toiled for the Kongu region,” and recalled how Subbarayan's request for another women’s college was accepted by Karunanidhi.
Stalin emphasized that it was Karunanidhi who played a pivotal role in declaring the Kongu Vellalars as a backward community and asserted that the DMK is committed to the development and empowerment of women in the region.
Reflecting on the contributions of the Dravidian movement and past leaders in advancing education in Tamil Nadu, Stalin credited these efforts for the abundance of graduates in the state. He encouraged the youth, especially women, to seize educational opportunities.
Additionally, the Chief Minister urged social organizations to contribute to the education and health sectors. He insisted that their services should either be provided at low rates or free of charge.
