As per local media, five female workers and three male workers lost their lives in the explosion. Seven rooms of the factory were also completely destroyed due to the blast.
The incident occurred at Sri Sudharshan Fireworks in Virudhnagar district. As per an NDTV report, officials have stated that friction during the handling of the chemicals likely caused the explosion.
The death toll from the incident stands at eight - five women and three men. 12 other workers at the factory suffered from burn injuries.
In response to the deadly explosion, President Droupadi Murmu took to social media platform X to express her condolences to the families affected.
"Saddened to learn about the loss of many lives due to an explosion at a firecracker factory near Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for speedy recovery of the injured," she stated.
State Chief Minister MK Stalin also took to X to express his condolences over he tragic death of the eight workers.
"I convey my deepest condolences and condolences to the families and relatives of the deceased workers. Relief assistance to the victims will be provided with the approval of the Election Commission," stated the CM on X.
Sivakasi is often referred to as the “fireworks capital” of India due to the series of fatal explosions reported. Last month, three men were killed after an explosion in a stone quarry.
In October 2023, around 27 people were killed in less than a fortnight due to an explosion.
At Sivakasi, many experts have urged the state government to conduct safety audits due to the increase in fatal explosion in the Tamil Nadu district. As of now, no arrests have been made regarding this explosion.
