Even as heavy rains continued to lash Telangana on Tuesday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the next four days. According to the forecast by the weather department, heavy to very heavy rain is likely to continue at isolated places in Nizamabad, Mahabubabad, Warangal, and Hanmakonda districts of the state.
Heavy rain lashed Hyderabad on Monday evening leading to waterlogging on the roads at many places. It led to slow movement of traffic and those returning from offices had a tough time. Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan urged people to take note of the alert and stay safe 'as a precautionary measure'.
The IMD issued a red alert (heavy to very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall) for isolated places in Nizamabad, Mahabubabad, Warangal, and Hanmakonda districts. An orange alert (heavy to very heavy rain) is issued for districts of Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Jangaon, Siddipet, while all other districts are likely to receive heavy rain on Tuesday, said the IMD.
Several low-lying residential areas were left inundated after Monday night's downpour in Hyderabad. The highest rainfall in the city was recorded at 7.9 cm from Charminar. Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over the west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, a low-pressure system formed over the same region and is likely to develop into a depression on Wednesday. This system is likely to move slowly west-northwestwards across north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coast and is likely to impact the Telangana region too, head of IMD Hyderabad Dr K Nagarathna said.
The Telangana Directorate of School Education (DSE) announced on Monday, July 24 that primary schools in the state will operate from 9.30 am to 4.45 pm with the exception of those in Secunderabad and Hyderabad in view of heavy rains in the state.
Upper primary schools will conduct classes from 9:30 am to 4:45 pm while primary schools will end by 4:15 pm. “In the case of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, there is no change in the timings of school and hence will follow the timings given in the academic calendar,” read the proceedings.
However, many parents took to their Twitter accounts to raise their demand for holidays for schools in Hyderabad and other districts of Telangana. One of them said, "Despite Red alert in Hyderabad, why are schools functioning today? Are the schools and buses equipped with rain protectors or what?"
