Violence engulfs Manipur as clashes erupt over a dispute regarding job quotas, resulting in one fatality and the burning of numerous houses.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has appealed for peace in Manipur and assured that justice will be served to all sections of society. Speaking at an event in Guwahati while laying the foundation stone of the National Forensic Sciences University's tenth national campus in Kamrup district, Shah expressed his intention to visit Manipur soon and engage in resolving disputes.
Shah emphasized the need for both groups involved in the clashes to remove mistrust and suspicion among themselves and work towards restoring peace in the state. While the Centre pledges to ensure justice for those affected by the recent clashes, Shah stressed the importance of dialogue among the people to achieve lasting peace.
In addition to addressing the situation in Manipur, Shah highlighted the employment opportunities that will arise for students through the establishment of the NFSU campus. He mentioned the Centre's plans to introduce legal changes making forensic experts' site visits mandatory for crimes carrying a prison sentence of more than six years.
During the same event, Shah also launched an interactive web portal called 'Seva Setu' developed jointly by the Assam police and the Central Forensic Science Laboratory. This portal will enable people to file FIRs, report missing persons, and complete online forms for verifications related to tenants, paying guests, and domestic help, without the need to visit a police station.
According to the reports by NDTV, the recent violence in Manipur has resulted in one fatality and the burning of houses. The clashes originated from the Kuki tribal group's discontent over the potential allocation of guaranteed quotas of government jobs and other benefits to the majority Meitei community. This development raised concerns among the Kuki about the possibility of the Meitei acquiring land in areas currently reserved for them and other tribal groups.
The military has deployed thousands of troops in Manipur, curfews have been imposed, and internet services have been suspended for several weeks. An indefinite curfew was recently reimposed in the Bishnupur district following an attack by suspected militants that resulted in injuries and one fatality. The violence has led to the displacement of tens of thousands of people.
