Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday announced that the state government would provide a cooking gas cylinder free to Ujjwala scheme beneficiaries on the occasion of the festival of Diwali.
The Ujjwala scheme is a government programme to help low-income households transition from wood or dung cakes to LPG gas for cooking. The transition is being with environmental and health concerns in mind.
Adityanath said that around 1.75 crore families in Uttar Pradesh will benefit from the government's decision.
Separately, the Government of UP said on Twitter, "The Government of UP is liberating women from smoke through proper implementation of the Ujjwala scheme. In Uttar Prades, around 1.75 crore families are provided gas connections for free under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Scheme."
Adityanath made the announcement of free gas cylinder at an event in Bulandshahr where he inaugurated a number of development projects.
Adityanath said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a gift to every family through the Ujjwala scheme and reduced cylinder prices by Rs 300, referring to the Centre's recent announcement increasing the subsidy in the scheme, reported PTI.
"Now we have also decided that every Ujjwala Yojna beneficiary will be given one cooking gas cylinder free of cost as a Diwali gift," said Adityanath, as per PTI.
Adityanath said getting LPG gas connections was a difficult task before the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government came to power at the Centre in 2014, reported PTI, adding that he also highlighted other BJP schemes, such as 55 lakh women becoming homeowners in UP under the PM Awas Yojna and the construction of 2.75 lakh toilets under 'Swachh Bharat' initiative.
"In the last nine years, we all have witnessed a new India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This new India is prosperous, powerful and self reliant," said Adityanath further.
