A man allegedly engaged in cow slaughter was fatally shot while another sustained injuries in a police encounter in Rampur district, according to an official's statement on Sunday.
While investigating a case of cow slaughter in the Patwai police station area, the police received information that the suspects would arrive in Moradabad late on Saturday night in a vehicle, according to Rampur Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi.
Setting up a checkpoint, Patwai police observed a vehicle approaching rapidly from Moradabad. Upon noticing the checkpoint, the vehicle abruptly turned and attempted to evade the police, leading to a pursuit, stated the officer.
The driver lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn in the Milak police station area. Subsequently, the two suspects emerged from the car and opened fire at the police, who responded in self-defense.
In the exchange of gunfire, both suspects sustained injuries and were transported to the district hospital. Unfortunately, Sajid (23) succumbed to his injuries during treatment, while the other accused, Bablu, is currently receiving medical care.
Dwivedi revealed that both Sajid and Bablu, residents of Moradabad, have a significant criminal history. A case has been registered under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder) and the Arms Act. The police seized the car, country-made pistols, ammunition, an electronic weighing machine, and equipment used in cow slaughtering as evidence, added the SP.
