People say the bjp is communal. It was communal at one time. Today it is not.

Both Hindu and Muslim communalists are narrow-minded, biased and dogmatic. But theyhave a value system. They believe in something.

Today the bjp believes in nothing. It is cynical, criminal and unprincipled. Itcompromises with corruption. It uses religion only to exploit public sentiment.

BJP leaders have cheerfully colluded with Dawood's mafia in the pursuit ofpersonal or party gain. Knowing this, the party leadership turned a blind eye. Therefore,to describe the bjp as communal is wrong. It insults communalists.

A recent incident reveals this. Among the Kashmiri Pandits fleeing the Valley in 1989was the family of Krishna Kotru, a widow. Her family owned a villa on Srinagar's NewAirport Road. In the terror of the insurgency, the family left their fully furnished andfitted house.

Soon, the house was illegally occupied by a usurper more powerful than the rest. He wasAbdul Rashid Kabuli, former MP, who is vice-president of the Kashmir bjp. The signboard ofthe bjp adorns the house.

In order to sell the property, the owner wanted to have it vacated. In July last year, the owner wrote to chief minister Farooq Abdullah, with copies to the police authorities, stating the facts.

In October, the owner received a reply from the police. The police enclosed a letterfrom the occupant of the house, Kabuli, claiming that he had occupied it with the consentof the owners.

The owner wrote back to the police strongly disclaiming this version. In fact, neitherthe owner nor any representative had ever met Kabuli. After that, the authorities inKashmir remained silent.

The matter was brought to the attention of a bjp national executive member, SiddharthReddy. He informed home minister Advani, who's responsible for law and order. Advanitold Chaman Lal Gupta, bjp minister from j&k, to redress the grievance. JanaKrishnamurthy and Narendra Modi, in charge of the party organisation, also promised tointervene.

Despite repeated reminders, nothing happened. The bjp refuses to vacate the premises ithas illegally occupied. At the same time, it continues publicly to shed copious tears forthe plight of Kashmiri Pandits. The bjp's attitude is understandable. There are veryfew Kashmiri Pandit votes.

Better have fears
When I shed tears,
You'll know in a while
I'm a real crocodile!
