Bull's Eye

Prime Minister Vajpayee never made secret his admiration for Jawaharlal Nehru. Yearsago, Nehru airily told the press: "I have told the army to throw ...

Nehru was oblivious of ground realities. Indian soldiers wearing canvas shoes wererushed to confront Himalayan snows and Chinese troops expert in mountain warfare. Indiahas yet not recovered from that trauma.

Vajpayee went to Iran and airily announced that international terrorism and Talibanwould be fought. Did Vajpayee know the ground realities when he made this declaration? Didhe know that he was raising the stakes in a proxy war between transnational lobbies?

The enemy didn't waste time. It had already prepared the ground. The brutalmutilation of bsf personnel by Bangladesh Rifles points to more than a border skirmish. Itwas a move to create a new front against India.

The move was authored by Bangladeshi elements opposed to India and beholden toPakistan, the isi and China's pla. If Khaleda Zia wins the general election imminentin Bangladesh, hostility to India will be entrenched.

The government should have been prepared. Bangladeshi intellectuals led by Dr A.H.Jaffor Ullah had been openly lobbying for another partition of India. They sought a newconfederation comprising both the Bengals, Assam and the seven northeastern states.

On February 24, an agp mla, Dilip Kumar Saikia, raised the matter in the Assam stateassembly. Subsequently, an agp MP, Dr Jayasree Goswamy Mahanta, wife of the Assam chiefminister, wrote to home minister Advani urging him to take up the matter with Dhaka. Assamstudents had been crying themselves hoarse about the continuing Bangladesh influx intoAssam. Did the government do anything? No!

Instead, less than two months later came the Teheran Declaration, followed by theBangladeshi attack!

India is not fighting several battles on different fronts. It is fighting one war onall fronts. The enemy is one. Terrorists in Kashmir are the point of the lance.Pakistan's army is the lance. China is the hand directing the lance.

India must first blunt the point of the lance. It must defuse Kashmir. The governmentis looking for a route to find a destination. It should first know its destination andthen look for a route.

Does the government know what it wants in Kashmir?

If there's a hell on earth,
It is here, it is here, it is here!
If we're under a spell from birth,
It's of fear, of fear, of fear!
