In Punjab, wanted posters of a corrupt judge evading the police adorn walls. He escaped a police search party like a common crook. Delhi has already arrested a High Court judge for corruption. Bihar has suspended three judges for corruption. In UP, the police stalled a murder investigation involving a minister. To avoid embarrassing the PM during his Lucknow visit, the minister was dismissed pending his clearance by another state investigative agency. The case was not given to the CBI.
The PM's own cabinet ministers being investigated for crimes do not embarrass him. These include the minister in charge of the police. To evade court charges being framed against them, the ministers simply avoided going to court. A contrived technicality helped them delay the case.
The media writes about mass burials of 30-40 victims in Iraq. It remains silent about the unidentified 2,090 victims cremated by the Punjab police in just one district. The cbi has confirmed this to the Supreme Court. Five hundred of those victims had no connection with terrorism. The rest are being identified. Those bearing constructive responsibility for the carnage strut around like cult heroes.
Some time earlier a citizen gave an affidavit claiming he had acted as intermediary for two Supreme Court judges receiving bribes and committing moral turpitude. The bribe-giver was involved in an important case in which many politicians were accused. The affidavit mentioned bank account numbers, dates and the exact sums deposited in foreign banks. The affidavit was reproduced in a weekly. The Supreme Court Bar Council filed a contempt of court case against its editor. One of the judges admitted that he had visited the house of the alleged bribe-giver. In an astounding decision, the Supreme Court refused to entertain the case. The editor's damaging charges went unchallenged. After that, do judges expect people to respect them?
Citizens still have the freedom of expression and the freedom of association. They can propagate. They can organise. They can democratically change governments. They can save the system. If they don't, they deserve what they get.
