Bull's Eye

Nailing the organ-supplying mafia in the Noida killings case is insufficient. The buyer mafia must be unmasked.

Unnamed doctors have ruled out organ trade. But surgical instruments were found in Pandher’s house. What were they doing there? Another doctor claimed that some torsos had been cut with surgical precision. Reportedly, photographs of Pandher with naked children and video cameras were seized. Was there also child pornography? Pandher’s servant is said to have been the (self-confessed) killer. Pandher, reportedly, was a frequent host to call girls.

One day the media reported that organ trade was ruled out. Next day it reported that it was possible. The media glibly described Pandher and his servant as psychopaths. But does addictive sex which leaves partners unharmed denote a psychopath? Do two psychopaths collaborate for sex and murder? One fervently hopes the CBI will stop imitating Freud and Jung. This case might eventually reveal global connections.

Cutting up the poor to extract organs is a known racket. Years ago, it attracted attention in some southern states. More recently, tsunami victims were harvested for organs. Last year, 2,000 organ transplants from the poor to the rich occurred in Pakistan. But to exploit killing for extracting organs is heinous beyond imagination. Such organ extraction was discovered in China.

In June 2001, a former military doctor in China confessed to removing organs from executed Chinese prisoners, for sale to foreigners. Dr Wang Guoqi told US Congress that he had conducted nearly 100 such operations for China’s People’s Liberation Army. Dr Wang said the sale of organs netted huge profits for the PLA. China accused him of fabricating lies.

But years later, last November, China acknowledged that many human organs used in transplants were taken from executed prisoners and sold to foreigners who paid hefty sums. China’s deputy health minister Huang Jiefu called for a strict code to stem China’s illegal organ trade. Amnesty International reports that at least 1,770 people were executed in 2005. Some activists claim the figure could be as high as 10,000.

So, if the CBI does discover clues of an organ trade, possibly along with child porn, it shouldn’t hesitate to approach authorities in China, FBI, Interpol or any other appropriate agency. Nailing the organ-supplying mafia is insufficient. The buyer mafia must be unmasked.
