In Residence

Worli Seaface's skyscrapers and its laughing club.

A lot of cricketers live at Sports Field, Worli Seaface. I moved in here about 15 yearsago. Things used to be much quieter then. Wherever you looked there was the sea, therewere not many tall buildings to obstruct the view. Now the area is cramped, big buildingsstand shoulder to shoulder. You look up and see scores of cable wires running across thesky. But the Worli Seaface Association has tried to do a good job over the years. Thereused to be a lot of hawkers on the seaface. Now nobody is allowed to sell wares on thepromenade. Even the rocky beach is getting cleaner. Some shady activities used to go onnear the beach earlier; couples used to make out inside their cars till late in the night. All that has stopped now. The police commissioner himself walks on the seaface everymorning, so we are all well protected. There is this laughter club close by. Old peopleget together in a park on the seaface and start laughing aloud. I am convinced that thereis some science to it but some people complain that they make a lot of noise. I don’thave a problem but I’ve never thought of joining the laughter club. Never had aproblem laughing on my own.
