THE Supreme Court has stayed a Bombay HC verdict that acquitted a man guilty of assaulting a girl under POCSO, ruling that he groped his victim over her clothes and there was no ‘skin-to-skin’ contact. The SC said the HC’s ruling—that touching/pressing of a child’s clothed body was not sexual assault—would set a “dangerous precedent” and cripple POCSO’s intention to punish offenders.

Expelled AIADMK leader V.K. Sasikala was set free on January 27 after a four-year jail term in disproportionate assets case. Being treated for COVID-19, the close aide of Jayalalitha would remain in hospital for some more days. Her supporters celebrated as they expect her to gain control of the AIADMK.

Less than a month after he underwent an angioplasty, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly was taken to a hospital in Calcutta on January 27 to check “his cardiac condition”. Tests revealed that his vital parameters are stable. Ganguly was diagnosed with three blocked coronary arteries three weeks ago.
