Kiran Bedi was removed from her post of lieutenant governor of Pondicherry when the Union territory was in a political crisis following the resignation of four Congress MLAs from the V. Narayanasamy government. Bedi and the CM have been at loggerheads over a range of issues. As on February 16, the strength of the Congress in the 33-member assembly has decreased to 10, including the Speaker.

Police in Myanmar filed a new charge against ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi, which may allow her to be held indefinitely without trial. She has been charged with violating Article 25 of the Natural Disaster Management Law, which has been used to prosecute people who have broken coronavirus restrictions.

The Australian government will amend draft laws that would make Google and Facebook pay for news. The code aims to remove the digital giants’ dominant bargaining positions. Google has faced pressure elsewhere too. It signed a deal with French publishers, paving the way for it to make digital copyright payments.
