Over the past five years, India’s ranking on the Global Hunger Index (GHI) has fallen from 55 (2014) to 103 (2018). Interestingly, the Union Budget for the year 2014-15 allocation to the
Department of Food and Public Distribution was Rs1,10,500 crore, which went up to Rs 1,92,240 crore in 2018-19. While rising population could partially be a reason for that, the dismal performances still need to be looked into.
