Poachers wait to sight a herd. Once they spot a tusker (male), they start following the herd. Poachers then fire darts, specially designed 20-cm pieces of metal and wood, from crossbows to poison the elephant. They follow the tusker for six to seven days, until he falls to the ground and dies. Once the tusker is dead, they use steel saws to chop off a portion of the face and neck so as to remove the tusk. The metal and wood piece used to poison the elephants. Of the seven killed tuskers, it was found in the bodies of three. The national park is spread over 1,358 sq km along the Shivalik hills. In comparison, the reserve is hugely understaffed and ill-equipped.
