The Yamuna-Delhi Connection

  • 95% of the Yamuna's pollution in Delhi is caused by sewage.
  • About 50% of the sewage Delhi puts into the river is unauthorised—and hence untreated.
  • In all, 57 million people depend on the Yamuna for drinking water (Delhi alone takes an average of 600 million gallons a day for drinking).
  • Most polluted point: near Okhla where the Shahdara drain empties 600 million litres of sewage a day. At this point the river water has zero dissolved oxygen, and no life in it.
  • 80% of the pollution along the Yamuna's 1,370-km course is caused by the 22-km stretch from Wazirabad to Okhla in Delhi (just 1.6% of its length).
