AUS Vs BAN, ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: Free-Flowing Mitchell Marsh Steers Australia To 8-Wicket Win Over Bangladesh - As It Happened

Mitchell Marsh's 177 led the way as Australia warmed up nicely to their semi-final clash against Proteas with an easy 8-wicket win over Bangladesh in Pune. Put in to bat, Bangladesh were without the injured Shakib Al Hasan as Najmul Hossain Shanto led in his absence. The Tigers recorded 306 for 8 in 50 overs. In reply, the Aussies lost the wicket of Travis Head early for 10 but David Warner (53) earlier and Steve Smith (63 not out) stood firm alongside Marsh as the Aussies romped home to victory. The all-rounder hit 17 fours and nine sixes to end the match in 44.4 overs. He added 120 for the second wicket with Warner and 175 for the unbroken third wicket stand with Smith. Well, the Aussies walk into the semis with seven successive wins. That's some feat after their wobbly start at the start of the campaign. Pat Cummins | Australia skipper: It feels great. We thought it was a really good wicket and thought we could get that total. All 15 players have played this tournament now and we go up to Kolkata, re-assess and perhaps a few selection headaches there. He (Mitchell Marsh) played beautifully and the tempo he played with was sustainable and the way he finished off the innings, it's a scary prospect to have him next week. 7 games in a row, I think chasing 300 was something really special and everything is clicking together.

Najmul Hossain Shanto | Bangladesh skipper: I think the two run-outs (which changed the momentum). We got off to a good start but lost momentum because of those run-outs. If we had scored 340-350 it would have been different. Our fast bowlers bowled really well but the spinners weren't as effective in the middle overs, we want to improve our bowling in the middle overs. It's disappointing, we didn't play our best this tournament. We will see what we can do better from now. Mahmuduallah batted really well in this World Cup and Shakib also bowled well in a couple of games. We have to improve as a team. It is not about individual performances, we want to look at the 9 games and work on areas we need to improve.

A rapid knock by Mitchell Marsh sees him cross 50 in just 37 balls. Marsh brought a required calm after the loss of Travis Head's early wicket and David Warner's slow start. AUS 94/1 (14.3)

3:25 PM: AUS 58/1 (10) - Overs 1 to 10 Highlights 

An early blow for Australia, in the form of Travis Head, looked to have tilted the match in favour of Bangladesh. However, David Warner and Mitchell Marsh have since built the Australian innings to a respectable 58 from ten overs, steadily closing in on the target set by their opponents. Warner has been slow out of the blocks, but Bangladesh will be wary of the threat he possess if allowed to settle into his stride. AUS 58/1 (10).

Taskin Ahmed strikes early! He bowls Travis Head out, who has to walk back to the pavilion after a brief inning that yielded ten runs in 11 balls. AUS 12/1 (2.5)

A brilliant end to the innings for Australia with Sean Abbott sending Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Nasum Ahmed back to the pavilion. Bangladesh, though, cross the 300-run threshold to set their opponents a hefty target of 307. Tawhid Hridoy was the star batter for the Tigers, scoring 74 off 79, supported by strong batting unit, with Liton Das, Tanzid Hasan, Mehidy Hasan, and Mahmudullah all contributing with important runs. For Australia, Abbott and Adam Zampa claimed two each and Marcus Stoinis one, while Marnus Labuschagne's brilliance in the field got two more. BAN end with 306/8 after 50.

Sean Abbott has his second of the day as he forces Mehidy Hasan Miraz to give away a soft catch to Pat Cummins. Moments later, he stops a shot from Nasum Ahmed in its tracks before catching the batter outside his crease for a run out. BAN - 304/8 (49.3)

An outstanding inning by Tawhid Hridoy comes to an end after the Bangladesh batter gives away his wicket, attempting to go long. Marcus Stoinis collects his first of the match, with Marnus Labuschagne taking the catch in the deep. BAN - 286/6 (46.3)

And there we have it! Adam Zampa, Australia's highest spin wicket-taker in a single ICC Cricket World Cup edition. He traps Mushfiqur, who is caught by Pat Cummins, for his second of the match - and 22 of the tournament! BAN 251-5 (42.1)

1:30 PM: BAN 239/4 (40) - Overs 31 to 40 Highlights 

A mixture of emotions for Australia and Bangladesh fans as the first innings head toward its conclusion. Bangladesh are steady and in line to cross 300 in 50 overs. However, luck has been Australia's friend at times; the Aussies claimed another easy wicket after Mahmudullah was caught outside of the crease by Marnus Labuschagne. Towhid Hridoy, meanwhile, reached his maiden World Cup 50, propelling his team to a respectable score with ten overs still to play.

1:20 PM: Fifty Up For Hridoy! 

Towhid Hridoy as his first half-century of the World Cup. Hridoy's 50 off 61 have helped Bangladesh continue their march toward a 300+ total. 

1:10 PM: Another Run Out For Bangladesh

Bangladesh are throwing things away here. Mahmudullah walks back after being caught between the creases by Marnus Labuschagne, but not before he was able to hit 32 off 28. BAN - 214/4 (35.4)

12:40 PM: BAN 180/3 (30) - Overs 21 to 30 Highlights

Just when Bangladesh threatened to rack up a big total, a miscommunication between their two batters saw Najmul Hossain Shanto walk back to the pavilion. Run out while attempting to slide into the crease, Shanto's dismissal left Bangladesh 180/3 after 30 overs, still looking toward that 300+ total that seems to be par on course for Pune. Australia, meanwhile, are fighting back, but need their bowlers to start picking up wickets to restrict Bangladesh to a manageable total. 

12:30 PM: Shanto Run Out! 

That's extremely poor from Bangladesh at this stage of the game. A mix up between the batters sees Najmul Hossain Shanto scrambling to reach the crease but is run out by Marnus Labuschagne. BAN 170/3. 

12:00 PM: Zampa, Spinners Get Australia Back In The Game 

Twenty overs up here in Pune and the game is as finely balanced as it could be. Adam Zampa's introduction in attack has been a boon for Australia, with the spinner getting the dangerous Liton Das out. Bangladesh, however, are moving ahead steadily, still aiming for that elusive 300+ total. BAN 114/2 (20).

Adam Zampa strikes again! The Australian spinner gets Das and moves level with Dilshan Madushanka as the tournament's highest wicket-taker. Furthermore, Zampa is now one away from becoming Australia's highest wicket-getter in a single tournament! BAN 106/2 (16.4)

Bangladesh one short of the 100-run mark before drinks with captain-for-the-day Najmul Hossain Shanto on the crease. Australia got their breakthrough through Sean Abbott, who dismissed Tanzid Hasan with a slower ball, but missed a couple more chances to collect important wickets. BAN - 99/1 (15)

There it is! The breaktrough Australia have been waiting for. Tanzid Hasan has to walk back on 36 after being caught and bowled by Sean Abbott. BAN 76-1 (11.2)

11:20 AM: Bangladesh Fight Back 

Australian pacers have failed to capitalise on their fast start. Liton Das and Tanzid Hasan have slowly grown into the game and are now carefully attempting to build the Bangladesh innings at a steady run rate of around six per over. Sean Abbott and Mitchell Marsh joined in the Australian attack, but were unable to get the early wickets Australia so desired. BAN - 62/0 (10)

But the Tigers are showing signs of a fightback. It hasn't been the start Bangldesh fans would have been hoping for, with the Australian pacers getting their way early on in Pune. There have been just two boundaries - and only one of those two came from the bat of a Bangladesh batter, in the fifth over! Luckily for them, neither Cummins nor Hazlewood have been able to capture their men so far. BAN 20/0 after five.
